The Belmont High School oval is very good and will take a lot of water.

Happy New Year to everyone.

In2Cricket is back tonight and remember, we kick off up at the Belmont High School oval at 6.00pm for the next 4 weeks.

Access the oval from Rotherham Street, via Hill Street off Roslyn Road or via Rigo Street (via Laura Avenue).

There will actually be some limited parking within the school grounds or on Rotherham street itself.

Please remember to bring the money for the chocolates we handed out before Christmas and hand to Jenny during the session.

In 2 weeks time on the 18th and 19th February the club will be participating in the McGrath Foundation - Pink Stumps day.

In2Cricket volunteers will be wearing some Pink caps etc to raise some awareness to the Breast Cancer cause and donation tins will be on hand so please give generously on that evening.

A thunderstorm at 5.00pm on Friday evening was enough to wash out our In2Cricket session this week - a shame, but hey, that's Cricket. We may as well experience it all...

The Friday is our last session before the Christmas Break and we'll be having an activity night. Children move from activity to activity with a chance to show off just what they've learnt so far this year, earning points as they go.

We'll also have chocolates to hand out this week for our junior fund raiser. It'd be great if each family could sell a box of Cadbury chocolates over the Christmas break and return the money when we return.

Don't forget the club Christmas Party at the clubrooms, 6.45pm on Saturday, 18th December.

Session #3

A night with a difference tonight as we were able to merge the Blue and Green groups.

Dean (Froggy) and Jake kept the boys busy with a host of games ranging from British Bulldog to Rapid Fire and everything in between - catching, fielding drills and races.

We even managed time for a few groups to head over to the nets and do some bowling practice. It's a long way to bowl a ball, when your 7 or 8 years old, all the way down a full length cricket pitch but many made a great fist of it.

The yellow group tonight embarked on a game of Rapid Fire. It's always been a favourite, and some practice over the coming weeks will see it a regular fixutre.

Our first full session (after opening night) was great fun. A bumper "yellow group" made a great start on the basics of hitting (watch the ball!) and bowling practice and some small games even broke out towards the end. Well done!

The blue group headed off with Dean and after some good skills training, also played a couple of games of pair cricket. I witnessed some really really great shots as I drifted past late in the evening. Fantastic stuff.

In the green group we all tried really hard on our bowling actions for quite awhile. Getting those feet working in the right order can be tough but all the boys did a fantastic job. Nice straight

arms, watch where you want that ball to go and let it rip. Keep up the practice guys.

A Massive start to 2010/11

Well what a huge start to season 2010/11 for Alexander Thomson's Milo Cricket. Late last week, with only a few days notice we were lucky enough (or in the right place at the right time) to be selected to take just 12 children along to the MCG on Wednesday to take part in the Anthem Ceremony prior to the One Day International between Australia and Sri Lanka.

We headed up nice and early Wednesday morning and at 2.00pm, 12 very excited In2Cricket players emerged from beneath the Ponsford Stand and headed out onto the MCG, to

line up with Australian and Sri Lankan players for the singing of each country's anthems.

All the boys and girls did us proud, standing straight, facing the front and singing their best renditions of Advance Australia Fare.

While the 20,000 strong crowd enjoyed a memorable match with one of the greatest comebacks in history staged by Sri Lanka to win the game, we all know the main event (the pinnacle of the day) game before a ball was even bowled - well done guys - here's some photos to help you remember the day...

Welcome to the 2010/11 Season

Cricket and more importantly Milo In2Cricket is back for 2010/11.

Alexander Thomson will again be running an In2Cricket program, on Friday Nights at Highton Reserve.

We really hope to see everyone who played last year, come back for an even bigger and better season this year.

I (Stuart) will be the on-field coordinator again this season with help from Dean Thornburgh, Jason Cranny and Neil Fergusson once again. (We can always use more help so please let us know if you can help us out on a regular basis, on Friday nights.)

Our registration night will be held on Friday 17th September at the clubrooms at Highton Reserve, Roslyn Rd.

The cost for this season will remain unchanged at $55.

If you can't make it to register on the 17th you can always register on the first night, (Friday 29th October) or online at the In2Cricket Web Site. (the Online payment option is not yet activated, although we hope it will be shortly.)

Can't wait to see you all again in season 2010.

Night #10

Night #10 of Milo In2Cricket was a hot one! Well done to all that attended. Amongst several drinks breaks all groups had a very good evening. The blue and green groups split up for some games where we concentrated again on nice, controlled, straight arm bowling, watching the ball, concentrating while we were fielding and above all, being good team mates.

The Yellow group completed a few different games, winding up with a cracking game of Rapid Fire, with some great hitting, aided somewhat, by the slope of the basket ball courts ;-)

Night #9

We settled in nicely to our new surrounding at Bellaire Primary School this week and it was a great night at Milo In2Cricket.

The Green group took on a fully fledged game of cricket, with two sides, some great fielding, some really amazing shots, run outs and catches. It's fantastic to see some real improvement in that group. Remember to call out really loud when your batting...Yes! if you want to run, and No! if you don't.

The blue group did some exciting relay races followed by some games of pairs cricket. When I wandered past I saw some huge hitting and some really fast bowling which is fantastic.

The yellow group continued to improve their skills with some bowling and like the blue group, finished with a couple of small games. The straight arm bowling I noticed in that group, which is one of the hardest things to learn when starting out, was really, really good!

One such a great night, it is little wonder that we ended up handing out 11 McDonald's Awards - a new record for one night.

Night #8 - On the Move!

The nomadic Alexander Thomson Milo In2Cricket group resumed this week, at Bellaire Primary School making way for the Geelong Falcons football club, pre-season training.

We spread out around the grounds of Bellaire Primary School making use of as much area as we could. The session was perhaps a little disjointed this week, but we'll get better as we get used to the new surroundings.

Thanks to the many helpers this week. Naturally, depsite a great number of "official" helpers this season, we continue to need all the parental help we can get. Hopefully running the sessions at Bellaire will bring everyone together.

Hi everyone. Happy New Year.

Milo In2Cricket starts again next Friday (5th Feb) and remember we're moving across to Bellaire Primary School for the remainder of the year.

There are 5 weeks of In2Cricket left. There will be 4 nights at Bellaire PS, and the 5th will be a presentation night, back in the clubrooms at Highton Reserve.

I've been asked a few times about parking at Bellaire. You can enter either by the "bottom gate" off Bellevue Avenue (onto the bottom oval) and therefore park along Bellevue Avenue, of via the main gate, off Larcombe Street and therefore park around there.

It is not advisable to park in the school grounds as I am not sure when the gate may be locked.

We will be making use of most of the school grounds - bottom oval, what is left of the top oval, the terrace area and the basketball courts, so no one gate is better than another.

See you all there at 6.00pm on Friday.

Wow! Activities night at In2Cricket proved a great hit, and Dan from Cricket Victoria was super impressed with our group.

The activities night seems to be a fun one each year and we'll probably try one more before the end of the season.

So that was the last session for 2009. We'll be back though, in February 2010 for plenty more Milo In2Cricket fun! Things get underway when school goes back, the first Friday in February.

This week at In2Cricket

This Friday is the last Milo In2Cricket session before the Christmas break.

We will wind things up with a special activities night and this week we will be joined by Dan Schuppan from Cricket Victoria.

All children will be split into 8 groups. At the beginning of the evening, along with their name tags, children are to collect their own scoresheet.

On the top right corner of the scoresheet is a letter which will determine which group they are in.

Group"A" will start at activity #1, group "B" at activity #2, group "C" at number 3 etc. We will assemble as usual, and quickly preview proceedings.

Groups will spend approximately 5 minutes at each activity, followed by a couple of minutes to record their scores on their score sheets then move on to the next activity. So, the whistle will blow once to signal the end of an activity, then after a 2 minute pause for scoring, it will blow twice to move on to the next activity. (From #8, move on to #1).

At the end of the night, once they've completed all 8 activities, we'll come together for a few prizes and that will be it!

We will need at least one adult at each "station" and preferably, at least one adult to follow each group from activity to activity and help record the scores.

It should be a fun night - see you there!

Christmas Party.

On Saturday the 19th December the club is holding it's annual Christmas Party. There will be a BBQ and Jumping Castle down at the club and proceeding kick off about 6.30pm. Naturally (Mum's and Dad's) the bar will be open. I'll let you know prices once I know them - it's usually around about $10 per family)

The whole club will be involved, so please get down to Highton Reserve, meet some other club members and make sure the In2Cricket group is strongly represented. (We are in fact the largest group in the entire club so let's all get involved - it will be great to see you all there!)

If you can't make it this week, have a very happy and safe Christmas and we look forward to seeing you at In2Cricket, in the New Year.

Night #6

Games a plenty this week. Pairs cricket, Rapid Fire, and a few new ones - caterpillar cricket and "tagging the batsman" were introduced into the blue group to help encourage some team work.

It's great to see how well it's working too. I love to roam around the games towards the end of each session and watch the improvement. We've got 5 years in the yellow group all bowling with nice straight arms and really watching the ball when they bat - the shots have improved noticeably in that group.

While in the green group it's not unusual to see catches being taken in the field, run outs, great shots and very accurate bowling.

The middle group - the blue group - is being introduced to new games each week and are taking in plenty of lessons all the time.

It's great to see. Remember the main rule though -do everything with a smile on your face!

Night #5

On week where not much cricket was played by Alexander Thomson's senior sides, Milo in2Cricket went ahead as the black rain clouds stayed away.

Our Yellow Group continued with the "watching the ball" theme, smashing the ball of cones, but learning to control where they hit it this week. They then broke into a couple of different games where it was soon obvious that the practice is starting to pay off. In the games that I saw later in the night there was some fantastic straight bowling and really good hitting.

In the Blue Group we introduced a new game, which tries to encourage passing the ball around and "team work". We'll keep up with that and we'll keep practicing our bowling.

I also wandered over the the Green Group late in the night and was "super impressed" with the play I saw over there. The bowlers were running into bowl and the batsmen were watching closely and playing some really good cricket shots. This is so encouraging for us coaches. Keep up the great work kids! You'll be ready for under 11s in no time.

After Christmas, sessions will resume on Friday 5th February and will take place at Bellaire Primary School (parking in and around Larcombe Street, for the front entrance, or Bellevue Avenue around the "bottom gate"). We will make use of the bottom oval, the terrace area and the basketball courts. This should be a great facility for In2Cricket. Thanks to Jane Warren and Bellaire Primary school for allowing us use of the school grounds.

Night #4

Dark and threatening skies couldn't dampen our enthusiasm this week as our collective positive thinking kept the rain away long enough to enjoy our fourth night.

A few new games were introduced this week, some a smashing success, some, well, not so much...

The "Green Group" started with some real life cricket training drills and moved on to some games of pairs cricket. I must say how impressed I was with the improvement on display in that group this week. The bowling, batting, fielding and running between the wickets was fantastic. There's clearly a few future Alexander Thomson champs in our midst in that group.

We introduced a new game to "Blue Group" - called "Golden Child" which involves running around "bases" while the bowling side attempt to hit the stumps with their bowling. This helps you practice your straight arm bowling, while under a bit of pressure. It's hard to remember everything at once sometimes isn't it? By all reports the game progressed really well, and we finished with everyone's favourite - Rapid Fire.

The "Yellow Group" are perhaps not quite ready for the "Golden Child" game yet, but Rapid Fire was enjoyed by everyone once again, and a new take on the "hitting off the cones" saw some real progress, some clean hitting and keen "ball watching". Well done "yellows".

In the case of inclement weather...

Milo In2Cricket will only be cancelled if it is actually raining when the

session is due to take place.

So if it's pouring down at 6 o'clock you're safe to assume "it's off!" otherwise, turn up and we'll do the best we can to "keep the show going".

As mentioned earlier in the season, the Geelong Falcons (football team) require use of the Highton Reserve oval in the new year. As a result our post-Christmas session will move to Bellaire Primary School where we can make use of the bottom oval, the terrace playground area and the basket ball courts.

All young cricketers benefit from the repetition particularly early in the year as we learn to bowl correctly and always keep our eye on the ball.

We'll slowly introduce new games and more general cricket games as we progress.

Well In2Cricket is on in earnest now as week #2 saw the introduction of our three groups in beautiful cricket weather at Highton Reserve last Friday.

The "Yellow", "Blue" and "Green" groups did their thing. To repeat something I mentioned last week, if you feel you (or at least your child) are in the wrong group (either too easy, too hard o

r not with friends) please let us know and we can easily make the appropriate changes. It's easy to change and we've only based the groups of date of birth at this early stage.

As usual, we will need plenty of help from parents out on the field. Please don't feel you need to know anything about cricket. Each session will follow the basic format of a few skills activities for the first half, then a game of some description for the second half. The games emphasis the skills we practice and are just about all the kids getting a turn and having fun. The green group especially seems to need some extra helpers.

Thanks to everyone who did help last Friday, and thanks too, to the senior players who came down to cook the BBQ and open the bar. This adds a great social dimension to Friday evenings.

Thank you all for turning up to In2Cricket last Friday Night and welcome to the Alexander Thomson Cricket Club.

Welcome back to those who have been here before and to new participants, we hope it's the beginning of a long association with the Vikings. Feel free to read more about the club at our official website - here.

By now you will have probably me (Stuart Helwig) and the other coordinators, Jenny Page, Dean Thornbugh and Neil Fergusson.

As mentioned last Friday, in future sessions we will be splitting everyone up into groups appropriate to age and experience. This is designed to ensure everyone gets a good turn at a level suitable to their needs. Should you (or your child depending who is reading this) end up in a group you feel is not appropriate (or simply is not with your friends - which is the most important thing about cricket!) please speak up. Milo In2Cricket is mostly about having fun so we don't want anything to prevent that.

Also, remember, all the hats, bats, drink bottles etc look the same, so please label everything as clearly as you can. During the sessions the equipment (especially the bats) will be moved around the field, and often dropped when a given activity doesn't call for their use. Cricket bats with names on them tend to be returned much more easily...

It is a requirement that you wear the shirt (once you have one) and hat to each session. It will soon be quite warm and hats are very important. You should also bring along you cricket bat each week. There is no need for the ball or any other equipment though. Don't stress too much if you forget/lose the bat as we have a few spare, and activities rarely require all children to use a bat at the same time.

Tonight's the Night

Well it's finally here - In2Cricket takes off tonight at the Alexander Thomson Cricket Club, 6.00pm, Roslyn Road.

If you haven't already registered...that's fine, just turn up at 6 o'clock, with $55 and head upstairs.

For those that have, the children's kits will be available, however the shirts provided by Cricket Australia have come in various (and many quite large!) sizes. We are planning to withhold a lot of those this week until appropriate sizes can be sorted out. Anyone who misses out on a shirt that fits tonight, will get one next week.

After registering, or paying, all children and parents can head out onto the ground where we will be running various activities can be joined at any time.

Tonight's session won't be as structured as future ones, on account of the fact that not everyone will be able to start, right from the start.

It's still not too late. In2Cricket at Alexander Thomson starts this Friday night. (6.00pm at Highton Reserve.)

If you've already registered, turn up ready for some fun and games. If you haven't registered yet, turn up at 6.00pm, head up stairs and fill out the forms, pay some money ($55) and then join in the fun and games.

If possible, everyone will get their kits this week, which inlcude bats, hats and cricket balls. They also contain shirts but until the sizes are all sorted out, we may not be able to distribute all shirts.

Can't wait to see you all there....

Hi. Welcome to the Alexander Thomson In2Cricket blog.

Throughout the season we'll be using this site for some minor announcements and weekly posts (or maybe even more) highlighting each week's In2Cricket sessions and some photos showing all the fun of a Friday night.

So to get us started, here is a list of the sessions we'll be running for the 2009/10 cricket season.

Each session runs from 6.00pm until 7.00pm (or soon after depending on whether or not everyone has "had a go!"

While we have had one registration night already, (combine with the other junior sides at the club) the main registration night will be held during the first session (Fri 30th Oct - at the club) . You can also register online at any time. So please, tell any friends who maybe interested to come along on the 30th and join in.

We are expecting approximately 50 boys and girls again this year (maybe as many as 70). We have (officially) just 3 coordinators, myself (Stuart Helwig), assistant coordinator for the second year running, Dean Thornburg and off field coordinator extraordinaire, for the third time, Jenny Page.

As always, we will need all the help you can give us each Friday evening. No number of parents

on the field during each session is too many - so please, make yourself known to one of us (in the white coordinator's shirts and wonderful bright green hats) and join in. You don't need to know anything about cricket.

During the first session, while many families will be still completing the registration process we will be running games that everyone (parents, brother and sisters) can join in with - poison ball, british bulldog etc, and hopefully this will get things off to a very "social" start.

Over the past few weeks several parents have indicated they are willing to help and I will certainly be calling in those favours and hoping for many more.

We will vary the activities from session to session and certainly split the children up according to age group each week.

We find, particularly with younger children tackling the in2Cricket program for the first time, repetition of the basics (hitting the ball and bowling it with a straight arm) is the key progressing quickly on to more structured games later in the year.

Most sessions will follow a basic structure, whereby we concentrate on a couple of key skills for half the session and finish with a game of some sort towards the end. That game may take the form of pairs cricket, or some variation of cricket-type games that keep everyone involved and interested.

We can't wait to see everyone down at the club on Friday 30th October where another bumper season of Milo In2Cricket gets underway.
